Afghan woman refugee in Portugal gives birth to a baby
A woman from the Afghan refugee group that has been in Portugal since September gave birth to a baby in Leiria on Friday, this Sunday told Lusa one of the volunteers from the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) who supported her mother.
“The baby was born on Friday at the end of the day in the maternity hospital of Leiria. Both are well and healthy,” said the volunteer, noting that CVP’s Leiria delegation is supporting the integration of this family in Portugal.
Speaking to Lusa, the president of the CVP, Francisco George, recalled the importance of the Portuguese collaborating “with their support to the activities of reception and integration of refugees”, namely through donations that can be made in the ATM network.
Portugal has revealed so far about 200 citizens after the humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan.
At the end of August, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that Portugal has the financial capacity to receive Afghan refugees “in the house of origins”, with priority given to women, children, activists and journalists.
The Taliban conquered Kabul on 15 August, concluding an offensive in May, when the withdrawal of US and NATO military forces, which had been in the country since 2001, began following the fight against al-Qaida after the terrorist attacks in September 11, 2001.
