Spain beats Portugal and retains European title
Spain revalidated, this Saturday, for the sixth consecutive time, the title of European champion in women’s roller hockey by defeating Portugal by 5-3, in the final of the European Championship, which took place at Pavilhão Municipal do Luso, in Mealhada.
In an emotional game with more than half a thousand people watching in the stands, the selection came under very strong pressure on the track and after 15 minutes was already winning 4-0.
The first goal was scored after three minutes, by Aina Florenza, and a minute later Laura Puigdueta increased the advantage, in an attacking move.
Sara Roces, the Spanish national team’s top scorer in this European Championship, increased to 3-0 in the 13th minute, with a great shot from the corner of the Portuguese goal.
The Spanish team, which now holds seven European titles, made it 4-0 in the 15th minute, by Marta Piquero, in a half-track shot.
The national team, defeated finalists of these last five editions, reduced to 23 minutes, by Marlene Sousa.
In the second half, Portugal appeared much more dangerous, a sending Spain to its half track, and scored again in the 34th minute, by Rita Batista, in a great shot in the central zone.
A minute later, Spain increased to 5-2 by Sara Roces, the top scorer of this UEFA European Championship, with 12 goals.
Portugal even reduced to 5-3 in the 43rd minute, by Maria Sofia Silva, culminating an excellent attacking move.
Three minutes from the end, the team from the corners still benefited from a direct free-kick, punishing Spain’s 10th foul, but in the conversion Joana Teixeira couldn’t score.
Spain is the record holder with seven titles, including the last six, followed by Portugal with three, Italy and Germany with two, and France with a scepter.
