Although Bangladesh has a population twenty times that of Swedes, the death toll from the pandemic is the same
UNFPA’s country representative Dr Asa Britta Torkelsson said on Tuesday that Bangladesh has performed better than Sweden, and even India, in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Asa, a Swedish citizen, said this during a farewell speech to Minister of Planning MA Mannan at his office.
She has fulfilled her role as UNFPA’s national representative for the past four and a half years.
The planning minister informed journalists after the meeting and said that the UN country representative had noted that although Bangladesh has almost twenty times higher population than Sweden, but the number of deaths from the pandemic is the same, indicating a healthy covid-19 handling of Land.

Dr Asa said the people of Bangladesh had responded well to vaccination even though many citizens in several countries around the world, including the United States, refused to take the vaccines.
She said Bangladesh had returned to its pre-pandemic situation to overcome the losses. “The stop that was seen six months ago is not obvious now while dynamism has been infused into full-scale economic activity,” Mannan said, quoting the UNFPA representative.
Dr Asa also assured the Minister of Planning that UNFPA’s activities would increase in Bangladesh in the coming days.
In response to a small concern from the UNFPA’s representative on the existence of child marriage, Mannan informed her that the government has made great efforts to curb child marriage.
“Hopefully, the incidents of such marriages will diminish in the coming days,” he added.
