The strike of the “beer boilers” near Stiegl in 1907 called the gendarmerie into action
The works council of the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg-Maxglan is celebrating 100 years. For the 100th anniversary there were jugs for the 750 employees. The union can look back on eventful years. A detailed record was also kept of social activities.
The Stiegl brewery in Salzburg-Maxglan has existed since 1492. The private brewery with 750 employees also has an active works council. This is just celebrating its 100th anniversary.
The oldest mention of the works council is 1921
“The oldest mention of the Stgl works council can be found in a document from 1921,” says works council chairman Thom Kinberger. In fact, the story of the organized brewery workers began earlier: In 1906 the “Salzburger Wacht” reported on wage negotiations. In the “Salzburger Volksblatt” from 1907 there is a report about a strike of the Stiegler “Biersieder”, which even called the guardroom of the K + K gendarme post Maxglan on the plan.
Voluntary donations for the colleagues in Mülln
Polemic pamphlets, war correspondence and documents on trade union negotiations can also be found in the works council’s archive. Social activities were also documented: The support of widows and orphans and war refugees or die “Voluntary donations to the Müllnerbräu colleges”.
The first chairwoman of the works council of a brewery in Austria
To mark the 100th anniversary of the works council, all employees receive a special jug. The keynote address was given by Stiegl owner Heinrich Dieter Kiener. AK President Peter Eder brought congratulations. Thom Kinberger (48) has been with Stiegl for 27 years. He has been chairman of the group’s works council for eleven years. Birgit Siller (49) has been with Stiegl for 20 years. She has been chairman of the works council for seven years – as the first woman in a brewery in Austria.
