The city of younger McJannet starts as Ireland U19s draw with Sweden U19s in Spain
Luton’s youth Ed McJannet started for the Republic’s U19s when they held Sweden a 1-1 draw during the second of their two friendly matches held in Marbella this morning.
After a 2-2 draw on Friday, where McJannet came in as a second half substitute, he was one of 11 changes for the match made by coach Tom Mohan, with an eye on next month’s UEFA U19 qualifiers in Europe in Bulgaria next month.
After a tense opening of the game, Sweden took the lead halfway through the first half through Jusef Erabi, the forward converted after a great save by goalkeeper Arlo Doherty.
However, the Irish responded impressively, level for 30 minutes when Aidomo Emakhu struck down to bury a loose ball.
Ben McCormack could have added one to the visitors’ lead if his free kick had gone just a little lower.
After the break, the match was disgraced by a serious injury to McCormack, when McJannet was replaced with 84 minutes away, Ireland almost snatched victory late, sub Cristiano Fitzgerald unable to take a winner.
Republic of Ireland: Doherty, Gallagher (Seary 57), Mills, Abankwah (Garcia MacNulty 84), Adedokun (Adaramola 84), Corbally, McJannet (Lawal 84), Vaughan (Mullins 84), McCormack (Finn Benoa 71), Hayes (Fitzgerald 84), Emakhu (Pearce 63).
