“We were very much in winning and very thankful to the board and the president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly because there will be a permanent award for the first time. The award is the ‘Women for Peace and Security Award’ [Prémio Mulheres para a Paz e Segurança] which will be delivered for the first time, soon in Portugal, in this session, a great woman who is a ‘speaker’ Nancy Pelosi “, advanced deputy Adão Silva.
The president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Gerald Connolly, said that Nancy Pelosi was the first woman to be elected president of the House of Representatives in the history of the United States and that they will be in Lisbon, in the plenary session on Monday (11) to receive the prize and make an intervention.
The president of the Portuguese delegation, Adão Silva, highlighted that this is the first time that Portugal organizes this Assembly, thanking the organization but also the President of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, who was “completely available” throughout the process and considering that the planned program is of “huge quality”.
Adão Silva also referred that this “is a very special session, because from the outset it is a challenge to hold it with around 200 deputies from various NATO member countries”, he does not make use of all those present, with some participations from a distance.
“The world will certainly not be the same after the pandemic subsides, and neither will it be in the field of Defence, in the domain of security, in the domain of NATO”, stressed Adão Silva.
From today to October 11, the Portuguese parliament will host the 67th session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which will be attended by the secretary general of the Alliance and will address the situation in Afghanistan and the covid-19 pandemic.
An annual session, organized this year in Lisbon, will be attended by members of the Portuguese Government, official NATO representatives, experts in defense matters, legislators from the 30 NATO member states and representatives of Alliance partner countries from parliamentary bodies .
According to the official programme, among the themes on the table eliminated a 2030 NATO agenda and a review of the strategic concept, “the lessons learned from NATO’s involvement in Afghanistan”, in Russia and China, the evolution of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, climate change and even “democratic resilience and misinformation” or the covid-19 pandemic, among others.
The plenary meeting on Monday (11), will feature processes from the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, the prime minister, António Costa, the President of the House of Representatives of United States of America, Nancy Pelosi, United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Jean-Pierre Renaud Lacroix (representing Secretary-General, António Guterres), and NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, among others.
