Advance from Salzburg: speeders should lose driver’s license and car
The traffic officers of the Austrian federal state governments are serious: In the fight against the lawn, they want to ensure that not only the driver’s license but also the car is taken away from speeding offenders.
Salzburg’s traffic officer, Provincial Councilor Stefan Schnöll, announced this on Friday after a conference with his departmental colleagues in Ehrenhausen (Styria). Schnöll has dedicated himself to the fight against traffic hooligans. Most recently, the State of Salzburg started the “Owa vom Gas” campaign at the end of July.
Schnöll: “In a first step we have achieved that. The penalties are increased. We also demand that. In the event of gross violations, the driver’s license must be removed, and not just can.”
However, there was no consensus on the subject of mandatory vehicle acceptance. “I think it’s a shame that Burgenland voted against it. Despite vetoes, we will continue to campaign intensively for this measure,” said Schnöll.
Of course, the relevant resolutions must first be passed by the National Council. Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) had spoken out in favor of this type in the past. Support from eight regional transport officers would prolong the cause in the short term.
Countries want a share of the fine
The responsible state politicians also advocated that the fines for traffic offenses on state roads also go to the states as road maintenance authorities. So far, the federal government has received the revenue. “Safety also costs money. We are constantly investing in order to make our roads safer. For this there has to be adequate funding,” said Provincial Councilor Stefan Schnöll. In addition to construction work, there are also costs for speed monitoring in order to avoid exceeding the limit in the short term and thus avoid risky and dangerous situations on the roads.
