Trade between Ukraine and Belarus – infographics »Word and Deed
Relations between Ukraine and Belarus have been deteriorating rapidly since last summer. At first, Alexander Lukashenko refused to transfer to Ukraine “Wagnerians” who fought in the Donbass, then Ukraine did not determine the elections in Belarus, called for sanctions and scheduled flights to Minsk. Lukashenko has periodically accused Ukraine of preparing protests and setting up weapons. Economic relations between the two countries have not suffered as much as political ones. “Word and deed” understood, many bilateral agreements are changing between Ukraine and Belarus, as well as how the amount of trade is changing.
During the period of Ukraine’s independence, 219 bilateral documents were signed with Belarus: 105 – interstate and intergovernmental, 114 – interdepartmental. In addition, 86 interregional agreements were signed.
In particular, an agreement on society, good faith and cooperation between Ukraine and Belarus has been planned since the 1990s. The countries also signed an agreement on mutual protection of state secretaries, an agreement on the transfer of persons sentenced to imprisonment for further demonstrations, and an agreement on the organization of joint control at checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Belarusian state border.
In addition, the countries have agreements on cooperation in the field of forestry, consumer protection, nuclear and radiation safety.
Trade between Ukraine and Belarus has been declining recently. In 2016, Ukraine exported goods worth $ 985.2 million to Belarus and imported goods worth $ 2 billion 852.8 million. In 2017, its exports amounted to 1 billion 253.7 million, imports – 3.3 billion dollars.
In 2018, exports increased to 1 billion 418.2 million dollars, and imports – up to 3 billion 903.2 million dollars. In 2019, exports will increase to 1 billion 691.1 million dollars, and imports – up to 3 billion 879.6 million dollars.
Last year, exports and imports fell to 1 billion 444.3 million and 2 billion 969.8 million revenues, respectively. In the last half of 2021, Ukraine exported goods worth 740.5 million rubles to Belarus and imported 1 billion 954.4 million rubles.
The highest category of goods that Ukraine sells in Belarus is residues and waste from the food industry – 14.1% of total exports. Elsewhere, ferrous metals account for 13.2% of exports. The top ten also includes oilseeds and areas, nuclear reactors, boilers and machinery, railway locomotives, plastics and polymer materials, paper and cardboard, electrical machinery, copper and copper products, and ferrous metals.
More than half of all imports from Belarus are mineral fuels, oil and its products – 58.5% of the total. The top ten products imported by Ukraine also used good equipment, land vehicles (many railways), plastics and polymeric materials, wood and wood products, chemicals, nuclear reactors, boilers and machinery, glass and glass products, organic chemical compounds, electrical machines.
