″ Parties with anti-taurine proposals lost votes ″ and ″ were defeated in Lisbon ″
“It was clear that the attack on Bullfights does not yield votes”, understands ProToiro, which recalls the results of the local authorities this Sunday to justify that Tauromaquia continues to be important in the Portuguese cultural panorama.
“The new local authorities this Sunday were a barometer to the anti-taurine proposals of various parties, and Lisbon was the perfect example of the futility of using the attack on bullfighting as an electoral weapon, as the parties that introduced proposals against bullfighting were clearly defeated, losing votes “, defends the Portuguese Federation of Tauromaquia.
“More than ever is the time for all of us to affirm the right to cultural freedom and respect for differences. That was the message from the Lisboners to the parties”, defends a ProToiro.
ProToiro even analyzes the results party by party, starting with the PS, “with Fernando Medina, who presents himself in a coalition with a practically non-existent anti-taurine party, the Livre”, to which “it granted for the first time the inclusion of a proposal against bullfighting in Lisbon “. The proposal said that PS and Livre would work to make Lisbon a city free from bullfighting, within the legal powers of the Municipality. ProToiro recalls that, in fact, “the municipalities do not have any powers in the field of bullfighting”.
As for the PAN, where a new leader Inês Sousa Real “had her first test by fire, after reaching the leadership of the party, she bet everything on attacking bullfights”, says the Federation, overcoming the result “could hardly have worse”. “The PAN not only did not elect the councilor who said he would go, but also lost votes. It was overtaken by IL and CHEGA, it lost a municipal deputy (now reduced to one), being one of the great national losers, only missing the loss of the last municipal deputy for the PAN to disappear from the map of the municipality of Lisbon. “
Finally, a ProToiro focuses on BE, whose candidate Beatriz Gomes Dias made bullfights one of the most sought after proposals, stating that “Lisbon cannot accept bullfights in Campo Pequeno”. “For the first time, he was taken seriously on the topic of bullfights in an electoral campaign in Lisbon and the bet was completely unsuccessful: he lost 3,000 votes in Lisbon and was one of the biggest losers in the country.”
For ProToiro, “the results present in Lisbon are clear proof that the attack on bullfights does not yield an electoral trump card, as some judged.” “Tauromaquia belongs to the people and the Portuguese are clearly in favor of cultural freedom and, as indicated by the survey carried out by Eurodonsagem (December 2019), which indicated that 67.1% of the Portuguese would not vote for a party that took prohibitive measures about bullfighting and that 79.7% of the Portuguese think that watching bullfights is a personal choice and that the State should not decide on its existence.”
