Intended to export carbon dioxide to the country in tonnes
The company Carbfix has agreed with the Danish shipping company Dan-Unity CO2 on the transport of carbon dioxide for use in Iceland. The first ships will start sailing to this country in 2025, but each ship will transport 12-24 thousand tons of carbon dioxide in liquid form. It is estimated that up to three million tons can be transported annually to Straumsvík. This is stated in a press release from Carbfix.
The carbon dioxide imported to Iceland will be disposed of at Carbfix’s new Coda Terminal reception and disposal center in Straumsvík, where Carbfix’s technology will be applied to bind it in rock.
Carbfix is a project run by Orkuveita Reykjavíkur which involves lowering the permanent concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It has been operating at Hellisheiðurvirkjun for the past few years.
Environmentally friendly and cheap cost
The estimated cost of transporting and disposing of carbon dioxide in Straumsvík is 30 to 65 euros per ton, or about five to ten thousand Icelandic krónur. For comparison, it costs about 100 euros, or almost 16 thousand Icelandic krónur, to transport and transport each ton in a similar project in Norway. It can therefore be assumed that it would be desirable to dispose of carbon dioxide in this way in this country.
The carbon footprint resulting from shipping will only be 3-6% of the carbon dioxide that will be and will decrease over time, according to information from Carbfix. Dan-Unity CO2 will transport it to the country on specially designed ships that run on ecological fuels.
