Lille vs. Strasbourg – Football Match Report – 28 February 2021
Captain Jose Fonte struck late as Lille salvaged a point with a 1-1 draw at home to Strasbourg on Sunday to ensure they finished the weekend top of Ligue 1.
Fonte found the back of the net with four minutes remaining to cancel out Ludovic Ajorque’s opener in the first half and put Lille on 59 points from 27 games.
They lead second-placed Paris Saint-Germain, who beat last-placed Dijon 4-0 on Saturday, by two points, while Lyon will move to one point if they beat Marseille at the Stade Velodrome later on Sunday.
Strasbourg is now 15th with 30 points.
Lille dominated from the start but Strasbourg were more clinical and they took the lead nine minutes before the break when Ajorque volleyed home from Frederic Guilbert’s cross for their 11th goal of the season.
Ajorque nearly doubled the visitors’ advantage with a header two minutes later but Lille keeper Mike Maignan pushed it away with a superb save.
Strasbourg coach Thierry Laurey came off the bench towards the end of the first half, with Canal Plus reporting that he was unwell.
Lille kick into high gear after the break, but goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima parries a fierce strike from Jonathan Ikone to keep Strasbourg in front.
Fonte eventually equalized with a header but Lille were unable to take the three points despite a late effort.
