More money for expansion: This is what you need to know about the new photovoltaic subsidy
Photovoltaic expansion is booming. Especially now, when energy costs are high and Salzburg AG is raising tariffs, many people want to generate their own electricity. But how and when is the best time to get the funding? We asked around.
SALZBURG. The state of Salzburg and the federal government are currently massively promoting the expansion of private photovoltaic systems (PV systems). But while you can still apply for state funding, it is currently not possible to apply to the federal government. In principle, you can apply for both grants. Today we are talking to ÖVP energy spokeswoman Tanja Graf about how the federal government’s PV subsidies will continue.
questions upon questions
Recently, we have often spoken to people who want to set up or expand PV systems on their private homes. But at first glance, the funding jungle seems dense and difficult to navigate. You can currently apply for state funding, but not federal funding. The questions pile up among the people. Should one wait until both grants are available? Or can you also apply for federal funding afterwards? So when do I get my money? Do I even have a chance of getting a grant?
PV funding: an overview
Today we are talking to Tanja Graf from the ÖVP. The politician, who lives in Hallein, is spokeswoman for the energy sector and member of the National Council of the Austrian People’s Party. She gave us an insight into the design of the next round of funding. The ordinance on this is currently being reviewed and will then be decided by the ÖMAG.
“Last year, a total of 350 million euros was invested. You could apply for the award in four calls. Unfortunately, due to the great demand, a lot of them went empty-handed. This year, investments of 600 million and five calls for applications are planned.”

In concrete terms, this year private individuals will be able to apply for federal subsidies for photovoltaics on March 16, June 14, August 23, September 13 and October 29. According to Tanja Graf, around 10 percent of the sum is reserved for applicants who received nothing in 2022. Each of these application phases will run for three weeks.
More money and faster
In general, an increase in funding is planned and faster processing is planned. As Tanja Graf explained to us, there was a veritable explosion of inquiries last year due to the energy crisis. Not to be expected with this war beforehand. This year, however, ÖMAG is well prepared, both in terms of money and personal matters. It is therefore planned that, unlike last year, people can be informed after the application interview whether they will receive the funding.
An important point that concerns many of our readers is whether you can also apply for funding afterwards. According to energy spokeswoman Tanja Graf, no problem dies.
“Private individuals can now order, they can already build, but they are not yet allowed to connect them. As long as the photovoltaic system has not yet been connected to the power grid, they can apply for federal funding in the respective application phases.”

Another point that Tanja Graf emphasizes is the period of time between the confirmation of the subsidy and the construction of the plant. Last year, the PV system had to be installed within six months of the grant being approved. However, due to current delivery problems and the lack of skilled electricians, this is not feasible for everyone. Therefore, according to the energy spokeswoman, the period was increased to 12 months in autumn. If this is also not possible in individual cases, this can be extended by a further 12 months.
