Exceptional snowfalls between Romagna, San Marino and Marche: extraordinary accumulations at low altitudes
Exceptional snow has been hitting since this morning Romagnathe Brands and obviously San Marino which is right on the border between the two Regions on the Adriatic side of the Marche and Romagna Apennines. We are in the epicenter of the bad weather of these hours, which started with transit of the Polar Medicane last night and then continued throughout the day with intense and abundant rainfall. Snow falls from 200 meters of altitude, and it is very abundant above 500 meters of altitude.
Downstream to report 38mm of rain in Pesaro e 37mm of rain in Villa Verucchio, in the inland areas the snow accumulations are more consistent: City of San Marino it is literally submerged from beyond 50cm of snow just 755 meters of altitude. The images in the sliding photo gallery accompanying the article are spectacular. The snow has also caused traffic problems, especially from Domagnano upwards despite the continuous passage of snow plows. Three security checkpoints have been operating non-stop along the road since last night: at the Baldaserrona, between Fiorentino and Murata and at the Agip roundabout in Borgo Maggiore, to prevent vehicles not equipped with chains or snow tires from to go up.

A lot of snow also in the North of the Marches, with Urbino under 25cm of white blanket at just 485 meters above sea level (see photo in the sliding gallery above), and also in Romagna. Beware that the snowfall will continue for at least another 24 hours: next night and especially tomorrow morning new intense storms will rise from the Adriatic which will unload accumulations on the ground that are probably even more abundant than those of today. Tomorrow evening in these areas (Romagna, San Marino, Marche) there will be twice as much snow as there is now, with accumulations above the meter already in the low hills.
Tomorrow, due to bad weather, schools closed in San Marino. In light of the snowfalls of these hours and the weather forecasts announcing more abundant rainfall for tonight – reads a note -, the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture and the Secretariat of State for Employment, following a meeting with the Civil Protection, they deemed it necessary to suspend teaching activities in San Marino schools of all levels, in the CFP and in the San Marino Musical Institute for Monday 23 January.
