In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry warned that this “shameful act provokes the feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world”.
Anti-Islam activist Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right political party Hard Line, staged an anti-Turkish protest outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm under permission from the police where he burned a copy of the Koran.
The incident has prompted official condemnation by Arab countries, while Turkey suspended one planned visit by Sweden’s Minister of Defense scheduled for January 27 in response to the protests.
Paludan is known for burning Koran in protests in Sweden and make remarks against Islam.
In the Foreign Ministry’s statement, Egypt warned of the danger of such actions that offend religions and fuel hate speech and violence.
Egypt also urged to uphold the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence and to prevent all forms of crimes against religions and their sanctities through such extremist methods.
“These extremist practices are incompatible with the values of respect for others, freedom of belief, human rights and human fundamental freedoms,” the ministry stressed.
