Cristina Alongi killed by a tree in Naples, justice done, but the compensation does not erase the pain
Cousin Patrizia Alongi to Fanpage.it: “The institutions have not learned from his death, after 10 years still collapses and neglect”
Interview with Patricia Longi
Cristina’s lawyer and cousin
The lawyer Patrizia Alongi, cousin of Cristina
“Justice has also been done in civil proceedings with the compensation awarded to the widower and daughter of my cousin Cristina, but it certainly does not erase their pain, especially of my niece who has now turned 18 and was just 9 when she lost her mom”. The lawyer speaks to Fanpage.it Patricia LongiChristine’s cousin tragically died on June 10, 2013, crushed by a pine tree fell while driving his car in via Aniello Falcone in Naples.
10 years after the tragedy, the sentence of the Court of Naples arrived, which recognized Cristina’s husband and daughter, a compensation of more than one million euros, jointly condemning the Municipality of Naples and the Ministry of the Interior, responsible for the fire brigade. According to the judge, that tragedy could have been avoided.

Was justice done?
True justice was done in the criminal court. Now even in the civil court there has been feedback that, if there are those responsible, they must take responsibility for what happened. However, this does not erase the pain of loss. When quantifying the damages, the tables of the court of Milan are prohibited. But all those who have lost a family member know that the pain never goes away. As for the timing of justice, it must be said that the sentence came after 10 years, but it did not depend on the court. The parties waited to appeal to justice, hoping that the institutions would come forward spontaneously. But that didn’t happen. The trial started in 2017, only 5 years ago, so justice was actually in time, considering that even a judge has changed.
Did Cristina’s death shake the city, has something changed in Naples in terms of maintenance?
Unfortunately no. It’s a fact. Indeed, I think the situation today is even worse. Cristina’s death was not linked to any meteorological event. She died in June, there were no extreme weather events, like wind or rain. Unfortunately today the situation is worse. The climate is completely, there are extreme weather events, as happened in Ischia, with great changes and wind, so the institutions should protect citizens even more carefully. Instead, this doesn’t seem to happen. Trees, scaffolding, ledges fall. Of course, I believe that in some cases, there are also private responsibilities. We need to be more careful and everyone has to play his part. I saw the video of the fallen scaffolding in via Aniello Falcone and it shocked me a lot.
What did he think?
I relived the drama. In the audio there are those who sound the alarm and say ‘it’s falling’ and there is a voice that tries to reassure. But shortly after the scaffolding falls. This time the tragedy didn’t happen because fate wanted it to, but that is a very busy road and yet another tragedy could have happened.
