Electricity price: SPÖ will be checked by the authorities

The Salzburg SPÖ calls for an examination of the electricity price increases by the federal competition authority in the state parliament on Wednesday. The background to this are statements by the former Director General of the competition authority, Theodor Thanner from Salzburg, in a Salzburg interview today.
Thanner had questioned the pricing of electricity companies and spoke out in favor of an examination by the competition authority. There is obviously no legal basis for the merit order principle. That would mean that we are dealing with agreements between companies, and that would be relevant in terms of competition law. This statement by Theo Tanner, former Director General of the Federal Competition Authority, brought the SPÖ onto the scene.
The Social Democrats now want to know exactly whether the electricity suppliers have agreed on prices, says Salzburg’s SPÖ state party chairman David Egger. “That’s why we are asking for an examination of whether there was anything wrong with this pricing in terms of competition law. That needs to be clarified.”
The state government should approach the Minister of Economic Affairs
Specifically, the SPÖ will submit an application to the state parliament asking the state government to approach the responsible Minister for Economic Affairs, Martin Kocher, so that he commissions E-Control and the Federal Competition Authority to examine the electricity price increases.
In his function as Federal Councilor, Egger will also address a direct parliamentary question to Economics Minister Martin Kocher and Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler from the Greens about the simultaneous increases in electricity prices.
