“Understanding” Salzburg: Inclusive tactile model of the city presented
Salzburg will soon be “understood”: An inclusive tactile model will be set up before the summer.
SALZBURG. Before the summer, an inclusive tactile model made of bronze will be erected in the Franziskanergasse in Salzburg.
Presentation at Mirabell Palace
The draft of the model was presented personally by artist Felix Brörken in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace last week. In addition to the Disabled Advisory Board, Tourismus Salzburg GmbH and the municipal council, the tourist guides were also invited. “Key models can be found in many European cities, often right next to the landmarks.
“I am pleased that we now have such a high-quality model in Salzburg,” said City Councilor Anja Hagenauer, Chairwoman of the Disability Advisory Board of the City of Salzburg.
“Understand” the city of Salzburg
Tactile models enable people with visual impairments in particular to get a better sense of the historical surroundings. But according to Monika Schmerold, chairwoman of the “knack:punkt” association, it is also interesting for others to see the structure of a city in 3D from above. “Experience has shown that everyone uses it or has fun grasping a city,” says Schmerold.
According to Neos councilor Nevin Öztürk, the then Neos councilor Kornelia Thöny had already applied for a tactile touch model for the blind in February 2017. “Almost six years, numerous applications, inquiries and official reports later, we now have the model of the model,” says Öztürk. A “touch model for the blind” is an important step towards inclusion and accessibility in Salzburg.
Model weighs 180 kilograms
The model is built on a scale of 1:700 and is therefore 216 x 117 centimeters in size and weighs 180 kilograms. The plan is to set up the model at the Franziskanergasse location in the area in front of the apse of the Franciscan church. The artist Felix Brörken, who comes from North Rhine-Westphalia, was practically born with the craft of bronze casting.
30 years ago, his father had the idea of using a bronze model to illustrate cities. Brörken used the digital city cadastre of the city with the help of Google Maps as the basis for the city model. The buildings, bridges and squares are carved by hand.
