A missing 26-year-old skier was found dead in the Aineck am Katschberg (Lungau) ski area on Monday evening. Mountain rescuers from Salzburg and Carinthia found the Lungauer under an avalanche.
The emergency services located the man using a mobile app. The 26-year-old was buried almost a meter off the piste by the avalanche on Sunday. Relatives reported him missing on Monday. “The police were first able to secure his car at the parking lot in the ski area,” says Hannes Kocher, district manager of the mountain rescue team in Lungau. A district alarm was then immediately raised for the Lungau local offices (St. Michael, Zederhaus, Tamsweg and Muhr) and a major search operation started.
Fresh snow makes the search difficult
“We combed the large search area with several search parties in very poor visibility – especially off the slopes,” says Kocher. A good 15-20 cm of fresh snow fell overnight. Using a mobile phone application, the mountain rescuers were able to find out the exact coordinates of the locals.
He had been hit by a slab of snow at an altitude of almost 1,800 meters. In addition to 50 mountain rescuers from the Lungau, ten Carinthian mountain rescuers, four teams of dog handlers, alpine police, helicopter teams, fire brigade, mountain railways, the disaster officer of the Lungau and the Red Cross were on duty.
