Football: Ex-Salzburg star collapses at the wheel Sports
Next shock message about an ex-Salzburg star.
The last active player for Brighton, Enock Mwepu (25), is said to have been taken to the hospital in his home country of Zambia with a suspected heart attack, according to a report by the “Zambian Observer”.
His ex-club also confirmed an incident, but did not want to give any exact details.
The Zambian Observer writes that Mwepu was in a car at the time of the suspected heart attack. An eyewitness is said to have confirmed that Mwepu was driving in zigzag lines and that he had suffered a heart attack. Accordingly, the former midfielder was able to stop the car, but then collapsed immediately after getting out.
Brighton and Mwepu’s advisors have now responded to the incident and given the all-clear. “The information I have is that he’s okay,” adviser Lee Kawanu told ESPN. “He felt unwell and went to the hospital to have it checked or, if necessary, treated.”
Brighton wrote in a statement on its own website: “Enock has been unwell in Zambia and is currently undergoing a preventive investigation. Our medical team is in contact with the hospital to assist if needed. The association would like to thank you for the many messages and the numerous support. Neither the club nor Enock want to say more at this point.”
Mwepu had to end his career in October 2022. The reason for this was a congenital heart defect, which was only recently discovered. He was found after collapsing during a flight with the Zambian national team and subsequently having to be hospitalized.
The 23-cap international has been under contract with Brighton since the summer of 2021 and made a total of 27 appearances (three goals and seven assists) for the Premier League club.
Previously, he played for RB Salzburg from 2018 to 2021. There he scored 18 goals and 20 assists in 119 cases. His former club commented on Brighton’s post on Twitter: “Get well soon Enock! Your Salzburg family is there for you!”
