Portugal with an average of 343 daily cases of covid-19
The transmissibility index (Rt) of the coronavirus that causes covid-19 has dropped to 0.95 in Portugal, with an average of 343 daily cases of infection, according to data from the Dr Ricardo Jorge National Institute (INSA).
INSA’s weekly report on the evolution of covid-19 reveals that the average Rt, which estimates the number of secondary cases of infection resulting from each person carrying the virus, dropped from 0.98 to 0.95 at national level, its true value being between 0.93 and 0.96 with 95% confidence.
The Algarve region, the Azores and Madeira have a transmissibility index above the threshold of 1.14with 1.42 and 1.42, respectively, indicate data from Instituto Nacional Dr. Ricardo Jorge for the period between the 2nd and 6th of December.
According to the report, the North region records an average Rt value of 0.89, the Center 0.91, Lisbon and Tagus Valley 0.96, and the Alentejo 1.14.
“In the European comparison, Portugal presents the cumulative notification rate for 14 days between 20 and 59.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and Rt less than 1, that is, an increased notification rate with a decreasing trend”, underlined the report.
Since March 2, 2020, when the first cases were reported, until January 6 of this year, It is estimated that 5,561,022 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus have already occurred in Portugal.
With the cessation of the state of alert on October 1, and the consequent change in testing rules, INSA reports that it has endured a sharp drop in the incidence and value of Rt that may not correspond to real decreases.
