THE worldwide in handball Male 2023 continues this Thursday, January 12, with the premieres of Brazil, Portugal and Cape Verde. Of the three Portuguese-speaking teams in the competition, only the Africans won in the first round of the preliminary round.
The Brazilian team lost to Sweden by 26 to 18 in Group C, after Cape Verde defeated Uruguay by 33 to 25. The Africans led the group due to goal difference, followed by the Swedes. Brazil is fourth, below the Uruguayans in goals scored.
Brazil started the game by giving the guests a hard time, without letting them open a big lead on the scoreboard. At the end of the first half the Swedes managed to stay two points ahead, with 11-9. In the second, Sweden made 15 to 9 to guarantee the victory.
Iceland dominated the lead from the start of the game, but Portugal managed to recover in the final of the first half, which ended 15-15. The Portuguese fought through the match until the final, with 24-24 in the final 10 minutes. However, the islanders held the score at the decisive moment, taking the game by 30-26.
Portugal is third in Group D, surpassing the Republic of Korea on goal difference.
How is the format of the Men’s Handball World Cup?
The Worlds has 32 athletes fighting for the world title, who also guarantee the country in the Olympic Games Paris 2024. If France wins the tournament, the runner-up team wins the Olympic vacancy.
France and Poland played the first match of the World Cup this Wednesday (11), with the current Olympic champions winning by 26 to 24.
In the preliminary phase, there are eight groups with four times each, in which the top three of each group qualify for the main phase. In this second phase, there are two groups of six, in which the best two advance to the quarterfinals.
Upcoming matches for Brazil, Portugal and Cape Verde in the Men’s Handball World Cup
Brazil’s next match in the World Cup will be against Uruguay, on Saturday, January 14, at 2 pm Brasilia time, also in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Portugal plays in the second round against the Republic of Korea, on Saturday (14), at 5 pm Lisbon time.
Cape Verde will face Sweden in Gothenburg on Saturday (14) at 4:30 pm.
There is no broadcast for Brazil, but the Portuguese can follow their selection through RTP 2 and the RTP Play platform.
