Impressive murals for the environment “dress up” schools in Athens
THE Municipality of Athens in collaboration with the Urban Act team, enabled talented Greek and foreign street artists to create impressive murals, in schools of Athens.
A colorful wise owl, a water landscape in blue and green, a tree house taken out of fairy tales and a beautiful bird in vivid colors, make up the four new murals that have been adorning as many schools in Athens for some time now.
These murals highlight contemporary art in the public space, beautify the city and add color to the urban landscape, removing the gray. By implementing a network of artistic projects and activities and utilizing the programming for Culture, the municipality supports artists and strengthens Athens’ relationship with modern art forms.

The last four murals in schools in Athens, which were included in the second part of the public murals program “From the roots to the sky”upon their completion, they beautified the forecourts of the school buildings and breathed life into the spaces where the students play, discuss and socialize.
THE Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannisemphasized about the event: “Through this original program and our collaboration with the talented street artists from all over the world, Athens acquires even greater dynamism and vitality.
The city and its schools become the ideal “canvas”, proving that with the necessary respect for the public space and the “street” artworks, they can be part of the aesthetic identity of modern Athens”.
What are the four murals and their creators?
-On the 24thThe Athens Primary School, at 20 Sarantaporou Street in Ag. Eleftherio, a dynamic, cheerful owl, created by Argentinian muralist and illustrator Fio Silva, welcomes the school’s students.
Fio Silva emerged as the winner of a competition in which young artists from 40 countries of the world participated, winning the prize to travel and paint murals in the capitals of street art, which now includes Athens.
Nature, with an emphasis on wildlife, takes center stage in her works. Her dynamic colors depict the natural world and her energetic compositions impress from the first glance. His works adorn walls in South America, Britain, Holland, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, etc.
–At the nursery on Thermopylon Street, Kerameikos, Sisa Soldati, from Buenos Aires, art teacher for adults and children presented the students with a “playful” expressionist mural depicting an agriculturist in a waterscape, “Natural Memory.”
A cat yawns lazily, an element that, as the artist herself mentioned, she added to “attract children’s interest and provoke laughter and dialogue with the children she loves so much.”
–At 8The Athens Primary School, a small river “runs” in the Ampelokipi, while the big tree, directly above, hosts a house, which fascinates the students..
The work is a creation of the Greek street artist BillyGeewho also implemented a participatory action for the students of the school, painting a low wall in the inner courtyard of the school.
Speaking about the central idea of the project, its creator said: “The neighborhood of Ampelokipi, located in the heart of the city, offers residents almost no contact with nature. So my idea was to create a “secret window”. I hope that everyone who looks at the painting can dream and create feelings along with stories. Children are the future and I offer this painting wanting them to create their own treehouse.’
–At 111The Athens Primary School in the Neighborhood of Gyzi, the Greek illustrator and muralist, Bilos, created a large representational image of imaginary figures borrowed from the natural world, which was also enthusiastically received by the children of the neighboring kindergarten. With his guidance, in fact, the students of the elementary school created their own mural on the wall of their school.
