Expensive petrol, Italians queuing at San Marino petrol stations for low cost fuel
In line from Italy for a full tank of fuel across the border. The phenomenon is taking place in Republic of San Marino where every time the cost of fuel increases in Italy, the gas station attendants – to their delight – see the code lengthen near the distributors. Just to give an example, the average price per liter of petrol on the Titano is stationary at one and a half euros, while in Italy there is an average increase of 20 cents per liter (which even costs more than two euros). This is because, as is known, an automatic increase in fuel price lists has been triggered since January 1st. The discount introduced by the government Dragons in the spring – in summary with the lowering of excise duties – in fact it expired on 31 December and was not extended.
Previous
In 2016, the increase in excise duties on petrol had already prompted the Italians (and in particular the people of Romagna close to the border with the small Republic) to go into pilgrimage to San Marino petrol stations. Those who tried last January when throughout Italy the cost of petrol had reached stellar figures were disappointed. In those weeks the cost of petrol in San Marino was quite similar to that practiced in Italy (the price increase did not depend on excise duties).
Temporary situation
Next 30 January – it must be said – in the Republic of San Marino fuel prices per liter will be similar to those in Italy. The reason soon said: on that date the government adjusted the prices to the excise duties. There will be a minimal difference due to the cost of VAT: 22% in Italy and 21% in San Marino, which is why it will no longer be worth crossing the border for a few cents of “discount”.
