Istanbul’s 4th tower: The tallest building in Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace II. The courtyard, located in the Tower of Justice (aka Adalet Pavilion), is inaugurated for the first time. The tower, which can be viewed 360 degrees of Istanbul, has a wider angle than the Galata Tower, Beyazıt Tower and Maiden’s Tower. The tower, which is one of the symbols of Ottoman justice, started to be built during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror. A part of the first construction building, which was wooden and not as high as today, was built during the reign of Mahmut II, and the final version was made during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz.

The location of the tower, which is the highest structure of the Palace with its 45-meter defense, is also important in terms of its symbolic meaning. The tower, which was used for observation purposes or for the contemplation of the sultan from time to time, was built outside the Kubbealtı (Divan-ı Hümayun) where the state was ruled. On the lower floors of the tower, there is a very small cell-type room overlooking the Divan-ı Hümayun, where the sultan watches his divan. The tower, which offers the opportunity to watch the view of Istanbul and the palace from the highest place, is waiting for the first gate of 2023 to open.

WE WILL KNOW THE LAND GROWS
The Black Aghas and Concubines Ward in the Harem is one of the structures whose restoration has been completed and which is the first explosion of the year. A part of Topkapı Palace was opened as a museum in 1924, but it was never opened to visitors until this dormitory building, which was used in the 1940s. In the Kara Ağalar Ward, which is a living space with all the elements in itself, Darüssaade aghas called Kara Ağa because of their ten colors lived. These aghas, who were closely associated with the sultan’s harem, are also known as Hâdimü’l-Haremeyn because they helped the holy places in Mecca and Medina with their own income. Objects belonging to them will also be exhibited in the three-storey Kara Ağalar Ward. In some parts, the life there will be explained with video footage and in others with wax sculptures. The current Kara Ağalar Ward is one of the oldest structures in Topkapı Palace, as it was built after the great Harem fire (1665) during the reign of Mehmet IV.

HOSPITAL ROAD FORTY STAIRS
One of the first structures of the palace to visit is the Concubines Ward, built in the 17th century. With its laundries, baths, wards, living quarters and even the Harem Hospital, the Palace almost resembles a big city. It is reached via 52 stone steps called forty stairs. The hospital, where all soldiers are women, is located at the far end of the Topkapı campus. The reason is to protect the notables of the palace against a possible child. Artifacts from that period will be exhibited in the Concubines Ward, and this part of the palace’s life that has not been opened the most will be offered to take away.
Visiting areas will merge three
- The restoration period has come to an end in Fatih Mansion, one of the first structures of Topkapi Palace, which came with ground slips. The 1500 tons of concrete load in their domes has now decreased to 150 tons. Instead of the removed concrete mass, the original wooden domes were installed. Currently, no movement is observed in the building. In the Fatih Mansion, which was used as the ‘Treasure Building’ where valuable items were kept during the Ottoman period, the most known works such as the Spoonmaker’s Apple, the Golden Throne, and the Topkapı Dagger are exhibited before the restoration. With the opening of all these restorations, the following visitable areas in Topkapı Palace will be removed together.

The reason for the acceleration of the restorations
Yasin Yıldız, the President of the National Palaces Administration, said that the restoration works accelerated with the loyalty of the National Palaces to the Presidency, and that they were able to establish a system like museum institutions within 4 years. Yıldız said, “The first of the important directors of our attachment to the Presidency is the existence of an independent scientific institution. Restoration works can progress very quickly under the scientific supervision of the organization. The use of the revenues of the Power Plants National Palaces only for restoration works. Third, there is a maintenance team of approximately four hundred people in the National Palaces. With all these historical artifacts, we aim to present an important model to the world in the field of museology and heritage.”
