Kick-off on January 19: DDr.-Alois-Lugger-Platz in the Olympic Village is being redesigned
The Olympic Park was built in 1964 for the opening of the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. In 2006 the DDr. Alois-Lugger-Platz created as a new district center in the Olympic Village. Since then there have already been numerous initiatives on and around the square – now it is to be redesigned.
INNSBRUCK. The DDr.-Alois-Lugger-Platz in the Olympisches Dorf district of Innsbruck is being redesigned to be climate-friendly as part of the COOLYMP project. This poses a great challenge, as the entire space is covered by an underground car park. Together with the project partners Innsbrucker Soziale Diensten (ISD), Innsbrucker Immobiliengesellschaft (IIG) and the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (LFU), the city of Innsbruck is also involving the population and the committed local associations in the planning.
launch event
A big kick-off event on January 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose hall DDr.-Alois-Lugger-Platz will provide information on the current project status and serve to collect impulses and ideas from the citizens. City Councilor for the Environment Uschi Schwarzl is happy about the redesign of the square.
“Public spaces must be designed to be climate-friendly and appealing to the population! This is the only way we can create conditions for open meeting spaces where all citizens can come together. I am pleased that we can now tackle the climate-friendly redesign of DDr.-Alois-Lugger-Platz with the COOLYMP project together with the population,” emphasizes StR Uschi Schwarzl.

citizen participation
The Innsbruck municipal council decided on the redesign last year, and a comprehensive process for finding ideas with the participation of the population has been taking place ever since. The aim here is to enable both a climate-friendly and needs-based conversion, taking into account the corresponding. The adjoining Olympic Park is also being considered, but the implementation of its redesign is part of a follow-up project. Together with the ISD district meeting point, the IIG and the LFU Innsbruck, the municipal office for citizen participation has been collecting ideas, concerns and concerns from the population for the last year in order to make the square as attractive as possible. A working group of experts from building construction and landscape architecture, communication and participation has been commissioned to accompany the process and plan. The COOLYMP project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund as part of the “Lighthouses for Resilient Cities 2040” program.
