The American University of Malta reduces the lack of recognition of the Jordanian authorities
A recent decision by the Jordanian authorities regarding the recognition of universities based abroad has no impact on the accreditation obtained in Malta by the American University of Malta, said the institution.
AUM, which is owned by a Jordanian investor, was reacting to news reports which said that the Jordanian educational authorities had suspended accreditation for the Malta-based university.
In a statement on Thursday, the AUM said that it receives its accreditation from the Maltese educational authorities and this is automatically accepted in the 27 member states of the EU. She added that the issue of recognition by third countries is distinct from accreditation.
The blogger Manuel Delia claimed that the AUM had “its accreditation revoked” by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Committee for the Accreditation of Academic Institutions Abroad in Jordan. According to the notice, AUM “did not comply with the basic standards and conditions of education”.
But AUM clarified that Jordan has recently updated its recognition criteria, which stipulates that for a foreign university to be recognized in Jordan, it must be listed in one of three international ranking tables – QS, Times Higher Education , or Shanghai.
Within this scenario, the AUM said that it has started the process to apply for one of these international rankings due to the new circumstances in Jordan.
AUM said the Jordanian education authority’s decision does not apply to any currently enrolled Jordanian students or those who previously graduated from AUM.
