How many bird species does the Ifs forest have?

In February 2022, near Caen (Calvados), the yew forest joined the network of refuges of the Groupe Ornithologique Normand (GONm). The signed agreement commits the association to carry out a scientific monitoring of birds of the forest: every month, a team of volunteers makes an inventory of the species present and maps the contacts.
44 species detected in the forest, including “rarities”
After 12 months of monitoring, between March 2021 and August 2022, a first annual report is published: 44 species have been noted at least once in the forest.
The rarities, such as the northern chaffinch, less and less present in winter in Normandy, the grosbeak, the migrating chiffchaff, have demonstrated the attractiveness of this wooded area.
“Among the species linked to old trees and dead wood, the marsh tit, more forest-dwelling than our winter feeder species, will be a good mirror of the effects of silvicultural work (forest management) programs by the municipality. »
Furthermore, GONm volunteers noticed a strong connection between the wood and its immediate environment, by the presence of species from urban areas such as the collared dove, the house sparrow, the European greenfinch, or species from the fields such as the common kestrel. They also highlighted a dormitory of pies.
In the evening, about fifty birds gather in a place in the forest.
