Europe ceases to be the center, Portugal in a corner and the globe represented vertically. This could be the new World Map
For many centuries Europe, the ‘Old Continent’, was literally the center of the world: political, social, economic, it appeared precisely as the center highlighted on the World Map. But, with the changing dynamics of the world economy, the guidelines of cartography also change, so the central axis of the new World Map must change in a future edition of the representation of the Earth in a flat version.
If we are used to seeing the central axis of the map in the Atlantic, and Portugal with a ‘prominent’ place, in the corner of Europe, which dominates the World Map, the economic reality is different in several aspects, also not in terms of population , so the change of axis may also have this justification, according to some scholars.
If in another era Europe was the most populated continent with the largest population, this is no longer the reality in the world. Incidentally, for a large part of the population, this ‘Western’ version of the World Map was never a reality, since in several Central Asian countries ‘their’ World Map is in the Pacific Ocean.
On this map, considered by many specialists as “the real world map”. It is China and India, two world powers with great potential for accelerating growth, as well as the USA, appearing in the center of the world in this representation, while Europe appears on the left side, with Portugal appearing in the ‘little corner’ of the map .
But there are other representations that can be adopted. If once the first relief world map made in China, the Kunyu Wanguo Quantu, which placed it in the center, was not accepted other places, it seems more and more certain that this is the highlighted axis.
In another representation, retrieved by the Big Think platform, a World Map is suggested with an adaptation so characteristic of our current times: Vertically for easy viewing on mobile phones and smartphones🇧🇷
In this version, the central axis is in the Indian Ocean, with India and China in the center, and Europe very different from what we are used to seeing, with differences, ‘glued’ to Africa and with Portugal in the upper left corner.
On the vertical map, the US is upside down at the top, with Canada at the bottom.
They are representations that, as Westerners, still make an impression on many Portuguese but that, as the political and social economic reality changes, the World Map must also follow these changes, becoming something different, but which we will have to habitual.
