Innsbruck gift coins still valid – tirol.ORF.at

Around 800,000 euros of the old Innsbruck gift coin are still in circulation. The Central Association of Old Town Merchants assumes this. The coins are no longer produced, but remain theoretically valid. An exchange for cash is also possible.
In 2018 the Innsbruck gift coins were discontinued. Until then, you could buy the plastic thalers worth ten or 50 euros and use them to pay at selected dealers in the city. In principle, this should still be possible, as the chairman of the Innsbruck merchants’ association, Michael Perger, said. The coins are said to be valid for even longer: “The old gift coin for the old town and city center is no longer being produced, but is still valid for 30 years. The coin also does not lose its value and validity.”
Individual stores might refuse coins
However, it cannot be ruled out that some shops will reject the gift coins, it said. The Zentrumsverein therefore recommends asking the cashier or the owner of the shop beforehand whether the coins will be accepted. If not, you can exchange them for cash at the Tiroler Sparkasse.
Its successor is the so-called “Inn-Taler”. This has been available as a check card or digitally since 2020. The Zentrumsverein operates it together with an Innsbruck company. The aim is to increase sales in the inner-city area. This local payment method is already running very successfully, explained Perger: “Inn thalers worth more than one million euros have already been sold. The system is also widely accepted. There are also more and more companies that accept the thaler as a means of payment,” says the spokesman for the center association.
