When the metal “pumpkins” came to Athens in December 2003
Helloween’s concert in Athens, in December 2003, through rare photos of Christos Kissatzekian and their great return to Greece, at the Release Athens 2023 festival, on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Water Square.
Those of us who own at least the two monumental works of the beloved German singers “Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I & II”, if not their entire discography, do not forget the coolness that the pandemic has in store for us with the postponement of their concert. On Saturday, June 17, 2023, hopefully our time will come when we will finally enjoy this traveling gathering of giants, in Water Square, and this time from the annual festival institution Release Athens. Seven years after her unexpected birth. Two years after their unexpectedly sweeping, self-titled sixteenth album that put them back in the upper echelons of the global heavy metal sound! For all of us, without exception, the much-desired reintegration of the inexhaustible Kai Hansen and of the iconic Michael Kiske next to the pillar colleagues Michael Weikath and Markus Grosskopfdid her miracle.
The last time we saw them in our places was ten years ago, in March 2013, at Fuzz Club in Athens and Principal in Thessaloniki. Put in the aforementioned soul-destroying ones, it is only logical and logical that the limited number of cheaper tickets that started at the beginning of the month it broadcasts, should be sold out all at once! Of course for the “craziest” of the village, as we know, there are also some limited VIP tickets for €120. With some additional privileges, such as the view from a separate elevated area with stools, priority access to the area, private car parking, separate toilets, as well as a souvenir that none of us know at the moment what it will be…
Photo report Helloween, InnerWish – Ark Nr.6, Saturday 6 December 2003
As for their first and for most disappointing visit to Greece, it was October 1998, as part of the tour to promote “Better Than Raw”. Back when we were still shooting ultra-sensitive color films and slides, printing samples and selecting photos. As was the case even on the night honored here, five years later, when they had released “Rabbit Don’t Come Easy”.

Ours had then opened in the evening InnerWish who already counted eight years in the courbetti and three releases, with the then upcoming “Silent Faces” in their suitcase vitally enriching the half-hour set of the evening.
At half past nine, exactly as the text of the late Dimitris Zacharopoulos reminded me, the quintet’s show started storming with “Starlight” setting fires. With the mediocre sound of the inappropriate space doing nothing to help the moods and palpable punch of the figure, the Andy Derris however, it left none of us room for indifference, let alone discomfort. With a setlist that barely honored their brand new record (three songs are nothing) and dreamily their old, legendary hits, “Keeper of the Seven keys”, “Dr. Stein’, ‘Future World’, ‘Eagle Fly Free’.
