New combined heat and power for 15,000 households
Business
The wood processing group Kaindl in Wals (Flachgau) is building a particularly efficient power plant with combined heat and power in 2023. It has now been submitted for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Fuel is biomass. The system covers its own needs and feed heat as well as electricity into the Salzburg AG network.
A combined heat and power generation has a particularly high level of efficiency when it comes to the utilization of fuels. A very high proportion of the waste heat from the power plant, which is used to generate electricity, flows into the district heating network or is used by industry for its own use.
Salzburg AG steps in as a partner
With the new project, the intention is to become less dependent on the general energy market, says Kaindl spokesman David Lahnsteiner. This new power plant had been planned for a long time. When the EIA has been completed, construction will begin as early as 2023 on the factory premises in Wals-Siezenheim. Salzburg AG is a partner. A large part of the heat is fed into their district heating network.
Five times the heat supply
15,000 households can be believer in the future. Kaindl’s current energy center creates 3,000 households.
The planned combined heat and power generation will also generate a lot of electricity via steam turbines and generators. Only waste wood from our own waste was used, so-called “internal production waste” – 350,000 tons per year.
The previous system remains as a backup
The costs are estimated at 175 million euros, says Kaindl spokesman Lahnsteiner. The combined heat and power plant should be ready for use as early as 2025. The previous system will then serve as a backup.
Kaindl is one of the world’s leading companies for wood-based materials, laminate and wooden floors. The family company employs 840 people.
