Marcelo warns that there are several Odemiras to look out for in Portugal – Economy
The President of the Republic announced this Saturday that there are “several Odemiras” spread across the country that drew attention and that “inflation is not just numbers” and represents a cut in the protests of many people.
“The emigrants are close. Now that our meeting is over, I leave for Odemira. And I’m going to Odemira because I had promised to go there until the end of the year. We have several Odemiras in our country, all countries unfortunately have several Odemiras, which have different aspects. positive and complicated aspects”, maintained Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during the presentation ceremony of the “Light of Peace of Belém”, by the Corpo Nacional de Escutas, in Lisbon.
Before a group of scouts, the head of state said that it was necessary “to go to those close ones, who come from I don’t know how many countries, speak I don’t know how many languages, have I don’t know how many cultures” and are “those who have reached the most”.
Already thinking about next year, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made it clear: “These crises hit deep, the inheritance is not just numbers.”
And the higher it is, the greater this impoverishment. Those who suffer are close people who have to be very close to our thoughts and our actions”, .
In the last year, there have been allegations of immigrants in Odemira, a municipality in the district of Beja, living in deplorable conditions and ‘chained’ to human trafficking networks. Odemira has one of the largest communities of immigrants in the country, who, among other occupations, work in agriculture.
Odemira is the largest municipality in the country in 2020 the emigrant population represented 40% of the total.
There were also reports of abusive behavior by elements of the GNR in Odemira against immigrants.
