Traffic: Fewer people die in Salzburg’s traffic
In a comparison of the federal states in Salzburg, the number of traffic deaths is falling continuously. The police and politicians are talking about measures that work, such as tougher penalties, security campaigns and structural measures.
SALZBURG. The current figures show that Salzburg is the only federal state with a clearly declining trend in traffic fatalities. In 2019 there were still 30 fatalities. According to the preliminary data published by the Verkehrsclub Österreich every year, there are 19 this year. Compared to 2021, there are five fewer fatalities this year.
Schnöll: Measures are having an effect
Of course, that’s not good news, says Transport Councilor Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP). “We can only be satisfied if the number of road deaths is zero and the situation stays that way for a longer period of time, because every road death is one too many.” Schnöll says that different measures, some of which are being taken in the country, would contribute to the positive development.

“disarm” perpetrators
Measures include dying two speed packs, which have now also been enshrined in law at the federal level. Schnöll mentions dying as an important element of the packages significantly harsher penalties up to confiscation of the car at extreme frenzy. “We can now take the ‘weapon’ away from the perpetrators and thus prevent worse things, including deaths,” says Schnöll.

Those affected appear in campaign
To improve the situation in Salzburg and to raise awareness would also die Traffic safety campaign “Owa vom Gas” involved, according to the provincial council. In the campaign, “testimonials” from Salzburg speak to age and target groups about their loss of family members and are intended to make the consequences of extreme frenzy visible.
Defusing the B156 and the B311
Also structural measures would contribute to increasing traffic safety, says Schnöll: “We have implemented many individual measures in the communities in recent years. For example, the defusing of the B156 and the B311 between Lofer and Saalfelden. There hasn’t been a single accident in this area in Weißbach this year.”

Police advocate prevention and sanctions
The police also confirm the success: “We see that in our daily work. Above all
Raising awareness is important and has a lasting effect. But we are also happy about the legal regulations, which enable stricter official sanctions,” says Salzburg’s state police director Bernhard Rausch.
