simultaneously began twelve years of life in Belarus. And in this drama
It seems that the Belarusians have not yet fully understood what an epic drama the Belarusian society is going through. July of the countdown became the same fateful year 2020, writes on Radio Svaboda political analyst Valery Karbalevich.
The main problem is that
in parallel, many cases arose in Belarus. These are Belarus in emigration and Lukashenka’s Belarus. They are separated not only geographically, but, more importantly, value. We can say that they use different civilizations, worlds.
It’s not even about significant emigration. Such processes have gone through many peoples, for example, in our agriculture – Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova.
The difference between the Belarusian emigration is not only that it is political, forced. It’s about the quality of human growth.
The country is supposed to have the most educated, dynamic, active part of society. It can be stated that the creative elite, the intellectual and cultural flower of the nation, left Belarus.
detection since 2020 we have seen a new phenomenon. The Belarusian diaspora has become a serious problem for politics, the leading society, the study of the global positioning of Belarus. If you try to find historical analogies of the departure, then you can compare the current situation in Belarus with a large emigration of the elite from Russia after the Civil War or the cultural layer of the country during Nazi Germany.
Now you can observe a new stage. The diaspora is becoming a place of appeal for the Belarusian identity, the civilizational code of nations. For example, the Belarusian Rada of Culture and the Danish Plant Industry Institute sign a contract with the European Commission to support Belarusian culture and art for 2 million euros. The organizations presented the project “ArtPower Belarus: preservation of the Belarusian space through culture and art”.
It is important to note that the Belarusian diaspora is scattered across different countries. As one expert recently aptly noted, Belarusians today are the People of Israel.
The problem is also that the logic of the Belarusians’ survival abroad is drawn to the conditions of the country in which they live. With past waves, accidents in the Belarusian emigration. Preserving the ethnicity of emigrants is an important goal of society abroad.
All this is happening against the backdrop of catastrophic processes in Belarus itself. A totalitarian system is being formed without the reversibility of society, with the militarization of public life. As a result of the loss of an unexpected alternative Belarus, there is an increase in trust in the fabric. Emissions of responses in messages on Twitter or emigration, regimes are formed by the society of Lukashenka’s subjects.
Culturally, the country is rapidly turning into a Russian province. Institutions that support Belarusian identity or simply a decent standard of living in different countries are purposefully spread. These are sciences, education, business, sports and others.
The culture has especially grown. The Kupala Theater has been liquidated, Belarusian book publishing has been banned, musicians have been imprisoned, etc.
Characters like Azarenka and Mukovozchik became symbols, “folk heroes” of this Belarus.
In ideology, narratives of the “Russian world” are artificially implanted in an aggressive form. Belarusians are being turned into “Russians with a familiar quality.” The authorities are examining the very idea of a Belarusian ethno-cultural form as hostile.
Will the Diaspora have enough strength, resources, creativity to observe, preserve the Belarusian matrix, the code of the Belarusian nation, so that later, at a favorable moment, transfer them to Belarus, to their native soil? The answer is not obvious. This is the essence of the Belarusian drama.
