Training
Elementary school teachers are trained at the Institute for Elementary and Primary School Studies (IEP). The training lasts five years. Since October 2022, Karoline Graswander-Hainz has headed this institute, where over 670 students are enrolled. The trained and experienced elementary school teacher worked for many years as director of the Hermann Gmeiner School in Imst and as an EU representative in Brussels before she started working at the University of Education in Tyrol. You have completed your studies in educational science at the University of Innsbruck and have been dealing with existential pedagogy, a meaning and value-oriented approach to life and education for over ten years. Karoline Graswander-Hainz knows how important the Master’s degree is for educators in schools.
“Although this one year of master’s training is intensive, because most students are already working at a school, it is still an important prerequisite for providing young teachers with knowledge and skills that will help them to practice their profession with good prerequisites and find joy and fulfillment in their work,” says Karoline Graswander-Hainz about the relevance of the master’s degree.
The graduates should be in good contact with all reliable people, above all the children, but also the parents, the teaching teams and with themselves, be solid and competent in their work and also be able to deal well with the challenges in the schools . “The Master’s degree offers practical and theoretical in-depth training and is important so that the best trained teachers work at the schools, who enjoy their job and can also successfully cope with the daily demands,” Karoline Graswander-Hainz continues.

joy and meaning
For the head of the institute, it is important that future teachers encourage enthusiastic students to learn and promote their self-determination. “Primary school teachers should create a wide range of opportunities and the foundation for young people to develop joy and a sense of learning. Teachers can support the children in the best possible way so that they take responsibility for their learning and their lives. This requires a good relationship between teacher and student. In this way, the students can develop their potential and afford it,” says Karoline Graswander-Hainz about a central task of primary school teachers.
