The Savon de Marseille has its address in Lyon
A simple, surprising gift rooted in French heritage….
A natural product as a gift? Savon de Marseille is famous but often this name remains overused or even counterfeited.
The term does not benefit from a protected designation. It is difficult for consumers to distinguish the real from the fake among the products sold in the market.
In Lyon, there is a store where you will be sure to make an authentic purchase: the Maison du Savon de Marseille opened its doors in 2020 on the peninsula.
So what is the real Savon de Marseille? Response from Véronique Lanaud, manager of the most Marseilles of Lyon boutiques.
Some so-called “Marseille” soaps come from abroad and not from Provence. They also contain animal fat and chemical additives.
Anxious to keep the traditional 100% vegetable recipe, La Maison du Savon de Marseille is working with the Savonnerie du Fer à Cheval to present a range of authentic products made in Provence.
A seal to guarantee authenticity
A “Savon de Marseille” label created by the Union des Professionnels du Savon de Marseille, an association created in 2011 to defend, promote and publicize the product, guarantees authenticity.
The label goes to companies specified in a geographical area and respecting a manufacturing process defined in a charter. Companies are subject to an annual check during an audit.
Savon de Marseille… a recipe with only 4 ingredients
A genuine product must contain exclusively vegetable oils and not animal fats.
With 4 types of ingredients: vegetable oils, water, sea salt and soda (at the origin of saponification).
Result: traditional, liquid, personalized soaps, shampoos and even toothpastes
The address to remember: 9 rue de Brest, 69002 Lyon. Open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
