SM Caen accepts logic against its neighbor Virois in the French Cup
The wait will have been long and the logic finally respected. This Wednesday, December 21 in its Michel d’Ornano stadium, SM Caen eliminated neighbor AF Virois 3-0 in the 8th round of the Coupe de Francein front of about 4800 spectators, mainly from the bocage to support the resident of National 3 against the professional weed killers.
President Christophe Lécuyer’s men ignited the public by delivering a courageous, committed and attacking start to the match. “We have two or three situations and if we score, thought Virois coach Cédric Hoarau*. We might not have won, but we would have liked to see what it would have been like.”* still at 0-0.
A few minutes later, Samuel Essende cooled Vire by heading a nice free kick from Deminguet (0-1 13th). The leader of National 3 let his chance slip away for good when he saw Epailly miss the target with his header. Later, on a fairly innocuous action at first, Alexandre Mendy managed to cross his shot, deceiving an unresponsive goalkeeper (0-2 38th). “We take a but very early in the match and another shortly after. It was very complicated”admitted defender Hippolyte Voivenel.
Launched on good track, Caen managed their lead in the second half, running a “very good team, who know their subject well”, greeted Stéphane Moulin, the Caen technician, satisfied with the “serious” of his troops. After several big chances rejected by goalkeeper Keny Bertheaume, Kyeremeh worsened the score in the final (0-3 84th).
The adventure stops for Vire, which should have “preferred to play at the Pierre Compte stadium in Vire. We would have had a better chance of passing”, let go of Hippolyte Voivenel. This Vire – Caen should have been held in the bocage but two reports got the better of his holding at the amateur club. Against bad luck good heart, the Virois captain Axel Flucher retained strong memories: “We felt that a lot of people were behind us. Playing in a stadium like that for an amateur player, what more could you ask for? Our group is linked for life with this moment”.
SM Caen will challenge Nantes (Ligue 1) on January 7 in the 32nd final of the Coupe de France. But before that, there will be Bastia, in Ligue 2, Monday, December 26. Vire, for his part, will take advantage of the winter break before defending his place as leader of N3 in mid-January against Dives-Cabourg.
