FH Innsbruck fixes emission-dependent landing fees » News | tip
The application submitted at the end of August to the Ministry of Transport, the supreme civil aviation authority, which included the corresponding model, has now been approved. This makes Innsbruck Airport a pioneer in Austria and possibly for other domestic airports. The aircraft are divided into three categories – the higher the emissions of the aircraft, the higher the landing fee.
Graduated according to size & consumption
The surcharges are intended to give the airlines incentives to fly to Innsbruck with their lowest-emission machines, according to the broadcast. According to the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”, the Innsbruck model envisages that all motorized aircraft, except for gliders, should pay. The first category includes those up to 1.2 tons maximum takeoff weight. These are single-engine aircraft, mostly private, sports and club machines. They account for around 55% of all flight movements. The second category contains around 15% or 7,000 movements (1.2 to 10 tons). The third group ended with a take-off weight of more than ten tons (about 30% of the flight movements).
The amount of the surcharge depends on the nitrogen oxide values. In the first and second category, a flat rate of two or six euros applies to the state fee. This means a surcharge on the usual landing fee of 20 (group 1) or 3.5% (group 2). According to the report, the calculation for the third category is somewhat different: Here, an “emission factor” is calculated for each aircraft using an internationally recognized formula. Number of engines, NOx value and fuel consumption would be included. This factor is multiplied by EUR 6 in Innsbruck to calculate the surcharge. On average 5-6%. Airport director Marco Pernetta assumes that by the end of 2023 all three groups will have earned around EUR 450,000.
vmodel for other airports?
In any case, Pernetta was convinced of the usefulness of the model. “We consider control measures that lead to lower emissions in the area of air traffic to be a useful contribution,” he emphasized. The ministry said Innsbruck Airport could be a model for other airports in Austria with the new system. “In the ministry, too, we will incorporate the experiences in future work on the Airport Charges Act,” it was announced there.
