In collaboration with Objectif Gard, the Opéra d’Avignon offers you your tickets to attend the show La Sérénade presented from December 30 to January 1.
Women’s comic opera. They are called “the beautiful and the ugly”; one cannot imagine today the humiliating boorishness endured by the artists of the “fair sex” in the 19th century, and the duo formed by Sophie Gail (1775-1819) and Sophie Gay (1776-1852) is no exception. . When a work is signed by a woman’s hand, we do not expect much and we speak of “lady’s work”.
The one-act opera they presented in 1818 at the Théâtre royal de l’Opéra-Comique aroused enthusiasm, however, the critics were reassured by the fact that men were hiding in the team, phew! The anonymity of the creators is an open secret and everyone knows that Sophie Gail composed the score with the collaboration of Manuel Garcia (which is not proven), everyone sees that Sophie Gay only slightly retouched La Sérénade ( 1694) by Jean-François Regnard, playwright in the repertoire of the Théâtre-Français brought to the pinnacle like the second Molière. Sophie Gail has stood out for her accomplished art of romance that reconciles strength and purity. She remains in history as the most programmed composer at the Opéra-Comique with five lyrical titles.
La Sérénade is cheerfully tucked around an unsightly bluebeard who intended to marry a young lady, who would rather be interested in her son… to sort out the affair, the valet Scapin will arrange a serenade in his own way. In order to make us discover this earthy musicality in an elegant style, Jean Lacornerie prefers to show how the two Sophies invite the public to touch a corner of the curtain to observe the work tracing its way between the Rossinian tradition and the taste for romance, between the memory of Mozart and that of Bach.
