an unprecedented temperature in December since the beginning of the 21st century
The capital known for eight consecutive days of frost in the last week, an unprecedented weather episode since 2018.
The weather has been particularly cold in Paris throughout the past week. Negative temperatures appeared on Sunday December 11 before continuing for the following days. A few snowflakes even fell on Wednesday morning without leaving a noticeable snowpack on the ground in the capital.
Eight consecutive frost days
The thermometer is not him, not gone up, and it even fell to record levels this weekend. This Sunday, a minimum temperature of -5°C was recorded at the Paris-Montsouris weather station. An unprecedented level of mercury at this time of year in the capital for several years.
According to the Météo-France meteorologist Francois Jobard, it is quite simply the lowest temperature recorded in Paris since the beginning of the century during the months of November or December. Paris had not experienced such a strong frost at this time of year since 1996.
“Of course, an incomparable episode compared to the cold spells of the past, but compared to those of the future whose days are numbered? Are we sure to see -5°C again in Paris in December?”, wonders the meteorologist on his Twitter account.
Note that before this record Sunday, negative temperatures had been recorded every day last week. In total, the capital experienced eight consecutive frost days, a first since February 2018. That year, it froze in Paris every day from February 22 to March 1, according to BFMTV weather journalist Christophe Person.
A thaw this Monday
However, the long series of frosts in the capital this year ended on Monday morning. As in much of the country, temperatures have risen significantly for the start of the week.
A minimum of 2°C was observed in the capital on Monday morning and the mercury is expected to rise to 11°C in Paris in the afternoon, 3°C above seasonal norms, according to Meteo France.
This warming trend is expected to continue in the coming days, despite rainy weather. A minimum of 8°C is forecast for Tuesday, and 6°C for Wednesday.
