The last section of the Trammino cycle path has been designed
The Municipal Council of Pisa has recently approved the final/executive technical project of the interventions aimed at the construction of a new section of the cycle path of Tramino. The intervention, financed with funds from the Pnrr for a total amount of 899,281.20 euros, will make it possible to create a cycle path connection between via Viaccia and the intersection of via Livornese, for a total length of approximately 1.5 kilometres.
“The work, surrounded by greenery – declares the councilor for mobility of the Municipality of Pisa, Massimo Dringoli – will allow the city of Pisa to be united without interruptions to the town of Tirrenia and complete thus the so-called tramway cycle path, built on the site of the old tram route which until the 1960s connected Pisa to its coast. The infrastructure will speed up the connection envisaged for the universities of San Piero: the new section will in fact be a faster, more direct route with fewer crossings than the current one on via Vecchia Livornese, which will become a route mainly intended for the inhabitants of La Vettola or, since it is illuminated, to be used mainly at night. Further expanding the field with this work will also close the entire north-south axis of the Tyrrhenian cycle path, as well as the east-west axis of the Arno cycle path”.
Also this section of the cycle path will therefore fall on the old track of the tram on rails, also known as ‘il Trammino’, from which it takes its name, active until the 1960s and which connected the city of Pisa to its coast. At the moment, the section from the former Piazza Sant’Antonio Station to Marina di Pisa and the part that goes from the Marina Station to Bagno Lido have been built. The project also refers to the ‘Ciclopista dell’Arno’ project, included in the three-year public works program 2019-2021, launched by Fiab and the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Prato and Pisa in December 2009, recognized as a “strategic infrastructure” by law regional law 27 of 2012 and then implemented with specific contributions from the Tuscany Region in 2014.
The cycle path will have a width of 3 meters and will replace the old tramway line for a length of approximately 1500 meters. The intervention involves the removal of the old existing tracks to allow for the correct implementation of the new route. From a constructive point of view, the road surface of the track will be created by forming a 30 cm layer of lime stabilized over which a layer of Binder and a subsequent layer of natural asphalt will be laid. The new road package will be contained by corten laminations placed on both sides and suitably fixed into the ground.
