Maltese Engineer vested with the Medal for the Service of the Republic: Honor for the Engineering Profession in Malta
The Chamber of Engineers congratulates Engineer Karl Farrugia who was awarded the Medal for Service to the Republic by HE the President of Malta during the annual Investiture Ceremony held on Republic Day in A palace in Valletta.
On the initiative of the Executive Council of the CoE, at that time the President Dr Eng. Daniel Micallef nominated Eng. Karl Farrugia (Chief Executive Officer – Central Procurement and Supplies Unit in the Department of Health) and other members of the profession for the consideration of the Nominations Committee in Honor of the Republic (Cabinet). The nominations were submitted in recognition of the essential contribution of engineers in healthcare and ancillary support systems and the fundamental, but underappreciated, impact that Engineers have had in different sectors during the pandemic of COVID-19.
The outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 and its impact on the Maltese Islands, made it very clear that healthcare cannot be sustained without engineers. Eng. Farrugia and his fellow Engineers were crucial for Malta to adapt and react to the effects of the pandemic on the health care system and the Maltese population. Malta was faced with an urgent and atypical increase in the demand for personal protective equipment, medicine and medical supplies, the Central Procurement and Supplies Unit (CPSU) was therefore tasked by the Government of Malta to take over the sourcing and the distribution of all protective clothing and equipment throughout the country for all Government departments.
The Chamber of Engineers is happy that the nomination of Eng. Karl Farrugia was considered and recognized. This Medal represents a unique honor for the profession supported by a nominating spirit that seeks to increase the recognition of Maltese Engineers in the various sectors of society in which they support the quality of life.
