Of the FC Wacker Innsbruck from an economic point of view has apparently made the curve towards continued existence. From a sporting point of view, the transition to the Tyrol League was bitter, but the 2023/24 league reform offers Wacker Innsbruck a good chance of switching to the Regionalliga Tyrol. After the first half of the season, Wacker is fifth in the table, which would be enough for promotion. FC Wacker is an enrichment for the Tirol Liga – the games are absolute highlights – also for the opposing teams. Great atmosphere, which is carried away by the Wacker fans in the stadiums, but the opponents also knew how to turn the duels against Wacker into real football festivals.
Looking back at autumn 2022?
Akif Güclü, coach FC Wacker Innsbruck: “We had a very difficult situation at the beginning of the season and everyone knew that anyway. New board, new team and players, some of whom played U16/1C last season. A new coach, no preparation, no friendly, just to name a few facts. Before the season, our goal was to keep the fifth promotion spot within reach so that we might still be able to react in the winter. We even managed to conquer this fifth place after the first half of the season. We are very satisfied with what the team has achieved in a short time!”
Highs and lows in autumn 2022?
Akif Guclu: “Highlights were all the games for us with our fans behind us! Another highlight, of course, were the victories – of course. Especially at the home games we had a great atmosphere. If I’m allowed to remove one game, it’s the derby against IAC away from home due to the way the game went, which we won 3-2 with a last-minute goal. The low point was September, when we were hoping for more points against teams in the lower third of the table!” When did the winter preparations start, what are the plans?
Akif Güclü: “On January 9, 2023 we will start with the preparation. We want to help the boys in the sporting and tactical areas and offer our fans attractive football.”
Outlook for spring 2023?
Akif Guclu: “Our goal is clearly promotion. We want to use the long preparation to internalize our game system. The league is extremely tight and with five promotion places, several clubs still have realistic chances. It’s hard to pick favorites – we’re looking at ourselves!”
Personal matters?
Akif Guclu: “Before the season, I knew what was in store for us. We only hear and read negative news about Wacker – like, for example, you won’t be around in a few months anyway. After such a start, I think that we are sportingly difficult and on the right track economically, which is not to be taken for granted. We want to get this traditional club back on track and I want to make my contribution to that. We would like to meet again with our fans and hope for full support again in spring 2023, which we will definitely need again!
