Teofimo Lopez vs. Sandor Martin: Live updates, results, highlights
To close out 2022, Teofimo Lopez will face retired fighter Mikey GarcĂa in an elimination match.
Teofimo Lopez has many plans for 2023. But to fulfill them, he must first derail Sandor Martin, a fighter who loves to have surprises in the ring.
Teofimo will face the Spaniard who ended the career of former champion Mikey Garcia, fighting him tonight at Madison Square Garden in an eliminator bout for the WBC super lightweight title, which will be televised on ESPN.
In his second fight at 140 pounds, Teofimo is looking for a statement win that will earn him a world title shot against reigning champion Regis Prograis next year.
“We all have a chance here. We all have a goal that we have to achieve this Saturday night. For me, it’s about how we can continue the ‘Takeover.’ And for that, we have to keep winning. Whoever they put in front of us, we have to beat them.
“The only surprise I think you’ll see is how much I’ve improved since my first loss in my career,” said Teofimo, who is looking to improve his record to 17-1 with 13 KOs.
Martin will return to the United States to repeat the upset he pulled off when he defeated Garcia in October 2021 in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“I’m fully ready for the fight. That’s why I came,” he said. “It’s three weeks’ notice of specific preparations, but I’ve been training in the gym because I’m an athlete 24/7, every day of the year. For me, it’s the biggest thing that’s happened in my sports career.
“Practically, in my country, it’s very difficult to be a boxer coming from Spain. It’s 11 years of professional career and 42 professional fights to get an opportunity like this. When I got the opportunity, obviously I couldn’t turn it down. . Teofimo Lopez. Madison Square Garden. Top Rank. It’s about making history.”
