City of Salzburg – More trees thanks to the climate fund
More trees than usual will be planted this fall. The reason for this is 50,000 euros more budget from the climate fund. Instead of the usual 150-200 trees, over 200 can now be planted. This pleases Vice Mayor Barbara Unterkofler, who is responsible for the city gardens and who actively supported the city gardeners in their work at two locations – in Alexander-Girardi-Straße (new planting) and at the playground on the Glanspitz (replacement planting): “Every additional tree in the The city has a positive effect on the urban climate and the well-being of people and increases the quality of stay on site,” says Unterkofler. “It is particularly important to me that the tree plantings are sustainable in order to be able to make a real ecological contribution in terms of our city’s adaptation to climate change. That’s why we choose the locations very carefully and also make sure that robust species are planted,” explains the Deputy Mayor of the importance of precise planning. “With this year’s autumn planting, we can continue to maintain the high number of annual plantings of the past few years,” Unterkofler concludes with satisfaction.
The additional trees, there are 67 trees, will be planted throughout the city. There are usually two budget pots for tree planting. These are what are known as equalization charges – private individuals have to pay this fee if a tree is felled on private property and no new one is planted – and the regular budget for trees in city gardens. In addition, there is now the third pot from the climate fund with an additional 50,000 euros. The average cost of a tree is between 700 and 800 euros.
