Career information fair BIM: In search of the perfect training
Apprenticeship, high school diploma or rather apprenticeship with high school diploma? Answering this question is not easy for many young people. At the BIM career information fair, 30,000 visitors get an overview of 217 exhibitors in the education and training sector. If you like, you can apply on the spot.
SALZBURG. “I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to get to know professional life quickly,” says Maik, a trainee in warehouse logistics. Others mention salary or independence as good reasons to start an apprenticeship. “I decided to go to school because I would like to study later. There is an apprenticeship with a high school diploma, but that would have been too strenuous for me,” says Leopold vom Borg Nonntal.
education and/or job
The BIM career information fair has the right exhibitors ready for both – i.e. apprentices and students. 217 of them are open to young visitors. This makes the Salzburg BIM the largest education and career orientation fair in western Austria.

Five apprenticeships for one seeker
And not only students and apprentices want to find what they are looking for there, companies do too. Because while students and apprentices are spoiled for choice, for companies the choice is usually limited. Young people who are currently looking for an apprenticeship can choose from a wide range of vacancies. According to statistics from the AMS Salzburg, there are 352 people looking for an apprenticeship and 1,788 open apprenticeships — across all sectors. From a purely statistical point of view, a seeker can thus choose from five open apprenticeship positions.
However, the signals are positive, says Governor Wilfried Haslauer, because the number of apprenticeship trainees has recently increased “- by 6.6 percent in the last year,” says Haslauer.

Schools are also fighting for heads
But the schools also fight for every head. Here, too, the low-birth rate cohorts are making themselves felt. There is also a lack of skilled workers in occupational groups such as care, education and nursing, as well as in many technical occupations.

Test talent at trial stations
And so 30,000 young people can get advice at the stands over the coming days, get information and try out a lot. The try-out stations “Just try it out!” attract many visitors who want to test their talents and skills. For example, you can use various cordless tools to cut metal or grind wood.

Training protects against unemployment
One should not underestimate any of this, because good vocational training protects against unemployment. This is confirmed by the figures from the AMS: 40 percent of the people affected by unemployment only have a compulsory school certificate as the highest completed education.
WorldSkills running
This year, visitors to the “BIM” can also follow the world skills championships “WorldSkills” on site. 150 international World Cup starters are also currently holding their competitions in the Messe Salzburg.
