The Widespread Garden of Biodiversity from the past trees for our future
The “Diffuse Garden of Biodiversity” was born in the territory of the Republic of San Marino, in five different places, the historic center of San Marino, Montecchio, Domagnano, Montegiardino and Cailungo, where the twins of the longest-lived and endangered fruit trees live. These plants are “the patriarchs”, they are endowed with great rusticity and resistance to climatic and parasitic adversities. This particular widespread garden has not only an aesthetic value, but it is a model of genetic conservation, a fundamental element for the survival of men, from the past the plants of the future to promote quality agriculture, which respects the environment and our health , it has been proven that these fruits of the past do not need chemical treatments for their growth.
This garden is a treasure trove of biodiversity as well as a small gene bank; a testimony and a laboratory of sustainability education to know, appreciate and enhance biodiversity. The Widespread Garden of Biodiversity of San Marino will be part of the Network of Gardens that the Patriarchs of Nature association has designed in the various regions of Italy, such as for example the nearby Cathedral of Leaves and Peasant Plants in Cesenatico which houses the latest work by Tonino Guerra a few hundred meters from the sea, the Garden of the Patriarchs of Italy of the Villa dei Quintili in Rome, on the Appian Way, the Garden of the patriarchal olive trees in Venafro in Molise and the March Gardens at the Mogol CET in Umbria .
Ing. Giuliana Barulli Director of AASLP: “I am proud to celebrate this national tree championship, which I helped to establish with the Secretariat of State for the Territory and the Environment in 2020, with the project of the widespread garden of biodiversity. Another important project which kicks off and follows the recent planting of the UN Wood in the Valdragone area. With commitment, dedication and desire to do well, small gestures can be made aimed at the new generations for the conservation of the environment and the territory that hosts us ” .
