The highest scoring FIFA World Cup final of all time
The FIFA World Cup has provided a rich variety of captivating games filled with iconic moments, red cards and goals.
One of the most significant matches came in the 1958 World Cup when Brazil took on Sweden in the final. This meeting still holds the record for most goals in a World Cup final.
WC final 1958 (First half)
Sweden broke the deadlock at the Rasunda Football Stadium within four minutes after Nils Liedholm used a fine piece of skill to get past two defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.
However, Sweden’s lead did not last long, as five minutes later a cross from Mane Garrincha found Vava who tapped the ball into the goal to level the match.
Brazil continued to dominate the match, and in the 32nd minute they took the lead for the first time after the combination of Garrincha and Vava struck once again to secure their second goal of the match.
World Cup final 1958 (second half)
The South American side picked up where they left off in the second half as they extended their lead to two goals as Pele added his name to the scoresheet by firing a right-footed shot past Kalle Svensson.
Just before the 70th minute, Brazil scored again and put the game to bed after a solo effort from Mario Zagallo.

Brazil’s dominance of the World Cup
Brazil’s victory in the 1958 World Cup was the start of their dominance as they went on to win the next three out of four World Cups. In the 1958 tournament, a 17-year-old Pele scored six final goals, with only French striker Just Fontaine finishing ahead of him in the top goalscorer rankings.
