At the Slush 2022 event, Marimekko announced a pilot for closed-loop clothing production that uses cotton fiber regenerated from production waste
Marimekko begins piloting closed circular economy textile production in its value chain. The project was presented in connection with the Slush 2022 start-up and technology event in Helsinki. Marimekko’s first capsule collection of three products, made from partially closed cycle regenerated fibers, will be launched in 2023.
In Marimekko’s closed pilot project, cutting waste and other leftover materials from the production of Marimekko jersey products are used as raw material for new Marimekko products. To ensure the quality and longevity of the clothes, at least 20 percent of the material is, depending on the product, regenerated cotton fiber and the rest is virgin cotton. The pilot project is carried out in cooperation with the Portuguese textile manufacturer Pedrosa & Rodrigues, which has focused on the development of closed-loop innovations for several years. The goal of the pilot project is to research ways to reduce the environmental impact of textile production and produce a life cycle analysis by external experts for products that use closed-loop fibers to support further development work.

During the Slush 2022 event, Marimekko presented its first pilot product, the Unikko hoodie, with Marimekko’s 3D avatar “Mari” in the brand’s immersive flower field on the 3D virtual platform in Decentraland. The virtual space in Decentraland will be open to a wider audience even after Slush 2022.
The announcement of Marimekko’s first capsule collection utilizing partially closed-loop fibers follows Marimekko’s recent steps on the sustainable development journey, such as the launch of the Marimekko Pre-loved retail marketplace in Finland and the release of the first joint commercial capsule collection with a sustainable fiber company. Spinnova, whose styles are made from a denim-like material blend consisting of approximately 20 percent SPINNOVA® fiber.
Material choices play a key role in Marimekko’s effort to reduce its environmental impact. Marimekko’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from textile materials by 20 percent and water shortages by 50 percent per kilogram of source textile by the end of 2025 and even more by 2030. Marimekko is committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). ) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
