Christmas in Salzburg: The Salzburg Christmas market opens its doors
The Salzburg Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is one of the first to open in the city of Salzburg.
SALZBURG. The first Salzburg visitors have already made it to the Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz today, November 17th.
Christmas market – as usual
This year, the Salzburg Christmas market will take place again as usual, without any corona-related restrictions. The offers of the 96 huts at the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt include regional dishes, handicrafts such as wooden toys, carvings, elaborately decorated glass and Christmas tree balls, ceramic objects, bouquets of spices, soaps, candles and wax figures as well as a wide range of Christmas decorations.
The Salzburg Christmas market is open until January 1, 2023. At the turn of the year, the market is transformed into a large New Year’s market.

Christmas tree out of town for the first time
The Christmas tree at the Salzburg Christmas Market comes from the city of Salzburg for the first time this year. A beautifully grown spruce was selected that had stood in a private garden in the Schallmoos district for around 80 years.
The Christmas tree on Residenzplatz is a figurehead for Salzburg’s old town and a popular photo motif for visitors from all over the world. The festive lighting of the Christmas tree on Residenzplatz will take place on Thursday evening (November 17, around 6:30 p.m.).
Important dates at the Salzburg Christmas market:
- At the Eiszauber on Mozartplatz you can skate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. up to and including January 31, 2023.
- Thursday, November 17, 10 a.m.: The Salzburg Christmas market opens its doors to visitors
- Thursday, November 17th, 6:30 p.m.: Official opening of the 48th Salzburg Christmas market and illumination of the Christmas tree
- Sunday, November 27th, 4 p.m.: Presentation of the new Salzburg Christkind and his little angels
- Monday, December 5th, 6:30 p.m.: Run of the Krampuses
- Tuesday, December 6th, 3:30 p.m.: Visit from St. Nicholas and Kinderkrampus
- Wednesday, December 21st, 7:00 p.m.: Large traditional Perchten Run
